Monday’s rewind: ‘Old days are over.’ Garinger High snaps 19-game home losing streak

Garinger High senior Khente’ Cathran had a career-high 16 points against Jackson Day Monday night

Garinger High School beat Jackson Day 70-65 to end a 19-game home losing streak Monday night.

The Wildcats (2-14) got career-highs in scoring from freshman Jameer Neely and senior Khente’ Cathran. Neely had 17 points an Cathran had 16.

Garinger, which beat West Mecklenburg Dec. 6, had lost 10 games in row but now has two wins on the season. And that’s progress. Garinger won one game last season and none the year before that.

The Wildcats haven’t won more than four games in a season since the 2015-16 season, when Garinger was 9-13. Since then, the school has endured five seasons with one or fewer wins.

First-year coach Sim Sanders, a longtime coach in the successful Team Charlotte travel basketball program sponsored by Under Armour, said it’s a new day at his new school.

“The old days are over,” Sanders said. “I’m changing the narrative. I want to be there. That’s the difference. All this new coach every year stuff is over, too. Everybody doesn’t want to be there, but I’m consistent with every program I’ve been involved in. I’m Garinger through and through. I love that place.”

Sanders is starting two freshman — Neely and Aaron Lawler — and playing a third ninth-grader, Kalae Burson, heavy minutes.

Lawler, who had a team-high 24 points Monday, averages 19.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.6 steals per game. He ranks among the top 25 freshman nationally in scoring average, No. 5 in North Carolina and No. 1 in Mecklenburg County among ninth-graders.

“The future is bright at Garinger,” Sanders said. “We’re excited.”
