Canadiens Call Up Owen Beck And Logan Mailloux

Early Saturday afternoon the Montreal Canadiens announced they called-up  Owen Beck and defenseman Logan Mailloux. With left winger Emil Heineman not going to the west coast with the team, Raphael Harvey-Pinard being sent back to the Laval Rocket and Michael Pezzetta still only getting crumbs ice time wise, something had to be done.

Beck had one short stay with the team early in January, skating in two games, the last two matches the Canadiens won against the New York Rangers (5-4) and the Tampa Bay Lightning (3-2). He was held off the scoresheet and averaged 7:35 in ice time, exactly two minutes over Pezzetta's average which stands at 5:35.

On the blueline, Jayden Struble had already been recalled following Kaiden Guhle's injury, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have a spare defender on hand, especially when playing away from home. Mailloux has played five games with the team so far this season and while he did look somewhat lost in his own territory, at least he was able to produce.

Mailloux's stay in Montreal was all the back in October however and one can hope that he will have progressed defensively. He averaged 16:30 of ice time, blocked seven shots and landed six hits. It makes sense for the Canadiens to call him up to evaluate his progress, especially given the injury to Guhle. Bringing him up also gives the Habs the possibility of bringing another right-shot defenseman in the lineup.

Three players skipped practice on Saturday; David Savard, Jake Evans and Alexandre Carrier all had therapy days. The Canadiens are not playing tonight, a rare Saturday off for the Habs who will be back in action on Sunday afternoon against the Ducks in Anaheim.
