Three Stars: Drew Willy, Keon Raymond and Dobson Collins lead Week Six’s performers

It's time for another edition of our Three Stars series, this time looking at the most impressive showings from Week Six.

First star/offensive player of the week: Drew Willy, quarterback, Winnipeg Blue Bombers: Willy's having a great year so far, and he continued that this week with a terrific performance in Winnipeg's 27-26 win over Hamilton Thursday. The former Buffalo Bulls star threw for 361 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions, completed 31 of 46 passes (67.4 per cent), and rushed twice for 16 yards. Perhaps most crucially, he performed under pressure, leading a 95-yard drive in the final 1:40 and capping it off with a two-yard touchdown pass to Nic Grigsby with no time left on the clock. Willy had perhaps the most question marks of any new starting pivot heading into this season, given that he hadn't started many games previously, but he's done superbly well so far. On the season, he's second in the league with 1,662 passing yards (just 25 behind Ricky Ray), and his completion rate of 65.5 per cent is also impressive. If he can keep this kind of play up, the Bombers are going to be a threat all year long.

(Honourable mentions: Martell Mallett, RB, Calgary; Rob Bagg, WR, Saskatchewan; Andrew Harris, RB, B.C.)

Second star/defensive player of the week: Keon Raymond, defensive back, Calgary Stampeders: Raymond made his return to the lineup in a big way Friday night against B.C., coming up with a remarkable 63-yard pick six against former teammate Kevin Glenn. Coming back into the lineup after missing two weeks thanks to injury isn't easy, but Raymond made it look that way; he also recorded seven tackles, tied with Deron Mayo for the team lead. Raymond, a Middle Tennessee State product, has been a big part of the Calgary defence over the last seven years. Although his efforts weren't quite enough to help them to a win Friday, you can bet the Stampeders are happy to have him back.

(Honourable mentions: Rico Murray, LB, Hamilton; Solomon Elimimian, LB, B.C.; Greg Peach, DE, Winnipeg.)

Third star/special teams player of the week: Dobson Collins, wide receiver, Ottawa Redblacks: Special teams awards usually go to a punter, a kicker or a returner, and Collins is none of the above. The Gardner-Webb alumnus did make perhaps the special teams play of the year, though, recovering Thomas DeMarco's 73-yard quick punt for a touchdown Saturday against Saskatchewan. It was Ottawa's first touchdown at home, and it came in spectacular fashion. It also required great effort from Collins; he did very well to slow down his run and keep himself onside at the start of the play, then sprinted down the field and managed to get to the football before everyone else. His night was solid in other respects, as he also had four catches for a team-high 68 yards, but it was the special-teams play that will be remembered for a long while.

(Honourable mentions: Tristan Jackson, KR, Saskatchewan; Ricky Schmitt, P, B.C.; Justin Medlock, P/K, Hamilton.)

Bonus star/Canadian player of the week: Rob Bagg, wide receiver, Saskatchewan Roughriders: Bagg had an incredible night Saturday, catching six balls for 123 yards (both team-highs) and helping reinvigorate the Riders' recently-struggling passing attack en route to their 38-14 thumping of Ottawa. Saturday's game in Ottawa was a partial homecoming for Bagg, a native of nearby Kingston, ON and a product of Kingston's Queen's University, and he was thrilled to see CFL football back in Eastern Ontario. Bagg's been on the upswing recently; last season saw him score his first touchdown since 2010 after recovering from a litany of injuries that included torn ACLs in both knees, and he finished the year with 34 catches for 430 yards and four touchdowns. This season could be even better for him, as he already has 238 yards on 15 catches.

(Honourable mentions: Andrew Harris, RB, B.C.; Lirim Hajrullahu, P/K, Winnipeg; Julian Feoli-Guidino, WR, Winnipeg.)
