Videos: Dueling pick-sixes played big roles in the Stampeders-Lions clash Friday night

The B.C. Lions' 25-24 victory over the Calgary Stampeders Friday was a game that went back and forth all night, and a big part of that came from some exceptional plays from the respective defences. First, just over halfway through the first quarter with the score tied 0-0, B.C. defensive back Ronnie Yell jumped a hook route, picked off Calgary QB Bo Levi Mitchell and took the ball back 35 yards for a touchdown:

That play easily could have discouraged the Stampeders and led to a blowout, but they stayed in the game and fought back. Up 10-7 with 6:15 left in the second quarter, they wound up getting a pick-six of their own from Keon Raymond after he jumped a route, and an even longer one:

Raymond was making his return to the lineup after missing a couple of weeks with a thigh injury, and he certainly made his presence felt on that play. He told Rita Mingo of The Calgary Herald he was razzed by his teammates for returning the interception so fast, though:

“When I got to the end zone, some guys were like ‘nobody’s behind you, you should have just walked in. You know we’ve got to go right back (out there),’” laughed Raymond, whose 63-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter was one of the highlights in the loss. “Sixty yards is nothing. I ran one back 117 yards. But it was definitely exciting to get back out there.

That pick was particularly special for Raymond, as it came against Kevin Glenn, a former teammate who started more games for Calgary than any other quarterback over the last couple of years. Raymond said he even called his shot in advance:

“I told Kevin (Glenn) I was going to get him. He just so happened to forget what number he was throwing it to. But it was a good play and it was a good game. I think the fans enjoyed it across the league and hopefully we learn from this. Get back to the drawing board and come back out and bounce back hard.”

Yes, despite Raymond's spectacular play, it was Glenn and the Lions who got the last laugh Friday, and Glenn's revenge against his old team must have been satisfying. Glenn and B.C. running back Andrew Harris were getting most of the praise afterwards, and deservingly so; both had great games. However, Yell's interception was what kickstarted this win for the Lions, and in such a close game, it proved essential. It's rare to see one pick-six in a game, let alone two, but both of the ones Friday were remarkable plays, and both Yell and Raymond made huge contributions for their teams.
