Three Stars: Dan LeFevour, Keenan MacDougall and Tyron Brackenridge top Week Five’s list

Here's another edition of our Three Stars series, this time spotlighting the CFL's top offensive, defensive and special teams players from Week Five.

First star/offensive player of the week: Dan LeFevour, quarterback, Hamilton Tiger-Cats: LeFevour's in his third year in the CFL, but he made his first start in the league Saturday against Ottawa, and it was one to remember. The former Central Michigan star threw for 361 yards and a touchdown with a 70 per cent completion rate and one interception and also ran for 109 yards and a touchdown on 13 attempts, giving him a superb average of 8.4 yards per carry. He was crucial to Hamilton's 33-23 victory. With Zach Collaros placed on the six-game injury list Monday with a concussion, the Ticats' starting QB spot seems to be LeFevour's for the foreseeable future. If he keeps playing like this, that could work out very well for them.

(Honourable mentions: Marcus Henry, SB, Ottawa; Will Ford, RB, Saskatchewan; C.J. Gable, RB, Hamilton.)

Second star/special teams player of the week: Keenan MacDougall, defensive back, Calgary Stampeders: Much of the discussion in the wake of Calgary's 26-22 win over Edmonton Thursday was about the Eskimos' fake punt that failed, and MacDougall was essential to stopping that, tackling Edmonton defensive back Aaron Grymes just before he picked up a first down. That gave the Stampeders the ball, and they quickly capitalized with a touchdown. However, MacDougall made another special-teams play that had perhaps even a greater impact, breaking through to block a Grant Shaw punt, then scooping up the loose ball and taking it in for a touchdown. MacDougall's in his third year with the Stampeders after being chosen 15th overall in the 2012 CFL draft following a solid CIS career with the Saskatchewan Huskies. If he keeps making big plays, he may soon become a big part of their defence as well as their special teams.

(Honourable mentions: Lirim Hajrullahu, K, Winnipeg; Rob Maver, P, Calgary; Rene Paredes, K, Calgary.)

Third star/defensive player of the week: Tyron Brackenridge, defensive back, Saskatchewan Roughriders: The Riders' defence was dominant in their 37-9 beatdown of Toronto Saturday, and Brackenridge was a huge part of that. He flew all over the field from his safety position, recording a sack, an interception and five tackles. Defensive backs have big responsibilities in Rider defensive coordinator Richie Hall's scheme, and Brackenridge's versatility has been key to their success over the past few years. The Washington State product is in his fourth CFL season, all of which have been with Saskatchewan. If he keeps making plays like he did this past week, he may be a big part of the green-and-white defence for years to come.

(Honourable mentions: Solomon Elimimian, LB, B.C.; Jovon Johnson, DB, Ottawa; Fred Bennett, DB, Calgary.)

Bonus star/Canadian player of the week: Shamawd Chambers, wide receiver, Edmonton Eskimos: Chambers has shown tons of potential at times since the Eskimos drafted him sixth overall out of Wilfrid Laurier University in 2012, but didn't really make the jump to being a consistent performer in 2012 or 2013, battling injuries at times and putting up just 390 and 465 yards in those seasons respectively. He's on track to do much more this year, with 195 yards on 17 catches through five games, and he turned in a great showing Thursday against Calgary, hauling in five passes for a team-high 68 yards and a touchdown. He's becoming a crucial piece in the Edmonton offence, and may be critical to their success going forward.

(Honourable mentions: Keenan MacDougall, DB, Calgary; Lirim Hajrullahu, K, Winnipeg; Sam Hurl, LB, Saskatchewan.)
