Three Stars: Emmanuel Arceneaux, Brett Maher, Odell Willis the best of Week 4

Moving on with our Three Stars series, here's a look at Week Four's top offensive, defensive, special teams and Canadian players.

First star/offensive player of the week: Emmanuel Arceneaux, receiver, B.C. Lions: Finally healthy after suffering a hand injury in training camp, Arceneaux was dominant in the Lions’ big win over the Alouettes. He caught eight passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns. Also impressive, and rare, is that he caught TD passes from two different quarterbacks. The Lions are starting to turn the corner after a rough start to the season, and Arceneaux is blossoming into a star receiver.

Second star/special teams player of the week: Brett Maher, kicker, Ottawa Redblacks: The Redblacks didn’t need to score a touchdown to win their first game in franchise history, thanks to Maher. The first year CFL kicker from Nebraska went six-for-six on field goal attempts, with a long of 48 yards, and accounted for all of Ottawa’s points in an 18-17 win over Toronto.

Third star/defensive player of the week: Odell Willis, defensive end, Edmonton Eskimos: The Eskimos’ game with the Blue Bombers was a battle of two perfect teams, pitting the best defence (Edmonton) against the best offence (Winnipeg). It was Willis and the Eskimos defence that turned the game into a blowout. Willis intercepted Drew Willy in the first quarter and took it back 17 yards for a touchdown, all the points the Esks really needed. For good measure, Willis recovered a fumble and made two tackles.

Bonus star/Canadian player of the week: Brad Sinopoli, wide receiver, Calgary Stampeders: The former quarterback-turned-wide receiver scored his first career touchdown – on a rush. The former Hec Crighton winner, who became a full time receiver last season, lined up wide for an end-around and after some confusion scrambled 26 yards for the touchdown. It was the only touchdown of the game in Calgary’s 10-7 win over Hamilton. He also added two catches for 25 yards and has developed into a reliable pass-catcher for the Stamps.
