Texas Lays Barbed Wire Along Mexico Border as Title 42 Set to Lapse

Authorities in Texas laid barbed wire along parts of the border with Mexico, in anticipation of increased migrant crossings after the expiry of a pandemic-era immigration policy on Friday, May 12.

The policy, Title 42, has been used more than 2.8 million times since March 2020 by US authorities to expel migrants at the southern border without allowing them to request asylum, according to data from Customs and Border Protection.

Citing officials, local media reported 13,000 migrants, more than double the current average, are expected to cross the southern border every day once Title 42 lifts at midnight on Thursday.
