News that the NHL is considering expanding its regular season from 82 to 84 games has fans frustrated with the league's commissioner Gary Bettman.

Video Transcript

OMAR: Oh yeah, let's add more fricking regular season games that players don't care about. Let's keep this stupid fricking playoff format, that players are actively talking out, speaking out against. I think Pat Maroon just recently said that he doesn't like it.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Pat Maroon was on the sports talk radio talking about it.

OMAR: Three time Stanley Cup champion says he doesn't like the format. What-- let's keep all that the same. But let's not, one, give other teams around the outskirts opportunities to have playoff like games. But like literally manifesting and creating game seven environments, which are like the best games ever. Those win or you're in? That was the coolest thing about the play-in round for the bubble, except that the Leafs didn't make it.

But aside from that aspect, it was cool.

[LAUGHTER]

So let's not do any of that. Let's not add more playoff-like revenue for teams, which is sick, because it's more money for the league. No, let's not do all of that. Let's add two more fricking games, two more games to the regular season, that players already say are kind of a drag at some point, anyway. Because-- especially the teams that know that the playoffs is where it's going to start? Let's add two more games, just so we can have, I don't know, Dallas face Florida an extra day. Like it makes no flipping-- it makes no sense.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Can I just say something? I just want to say something.

OMAR: Mhm.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: For the people who don't like the play-in games, right? People who just are like, oh, well we already having an 82 game season. Why do we need a play-in game? Let me tell you something right now about the Western Conference standings, OK?

OMAR: Mhm.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: The wild card as it is, Colorado and Edmonton are tied for that first wild card spot at 36 points, as of this recording. Mind you, it might be different by the time you listen to this podcast. Calgary, trailing Edmonton and Colorado by 2 points. And St. Louis also in there as well at 33 points. Could you imagine a scenario, a play-in round, where it's a battle of Alberta? And y'all are going to tell me y'all don't want it?

OMAR: That's-- oh my God. Are you kidding me, man?

AVRY LEWIS-MCDOUGALL: Well--

OMAR: Honestly, the man, he makes no sense. He makes no sense.
