It’s been an exasperating season for Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander at times and no moment better summarizes the downside to his rollercoaster campaign than a costly blunder he made in Game 2 against the Bruins.

Trailing 2-0 in the second period, Nylander went to retrieve the puck in his own end on a routine play. However, Nylander handled the puck with atypical, careless abandon and jammed the puck into the side of his own net, much to the surprise of Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen.

Bruins forward Danton Heinen swooped in on the loose puck and tucked it into the net to take a 3-0 lead, much to the confusion of Andersen, who didn’t see the puck before it was too late.

It hasn’t been all bad for Nylander, whose play has often exceeded his raw statistical output. Nylander signed a six-year contract on December 1, minutes before the RFA deadline. An error of this magnitude certainly won’t silence his legion of critics, however.
