It's that time of the year again when hundreds of cricketers and sportsmen from across the world descend upon India to take part in the highly competitive Indian Premier League.

A total of 74 matches, including the playoffs and final, will be played across 12 venues during the tournament, that is arguably the biggest T20 tournament in the world. While the entire tournament is expected to be played over a month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has only announced the schedule for the first two weeks of IPL 2024.

"During the two-week period, 21 matches will be played across 10 cities, with each team playing a minimum of three matches and a maximum of five," said BCCI in a news release. The reason behind this is the upcoming general elections in India, the BCCI said in February.

Five-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) led by Indian cricketer Ruturaj Gaikwad will face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) led by South Africa's Faf du Plessis in the opening match of the season this weekend.

The game is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. ET on Friday, March 22, and will air exclusively on WillowTV.

IPL organizers have planned an extravagant opening ceremony for the 17th edition of the tournament featuring big names including Oscar award-winning musician A.R. Rahman, Bollywood celebrities Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff and singer Sonu Nigam.

IPL 2024 Prize Money

While IPL organizers have not yet announced the total prize money for this year’s edition, Al Jazeera reported that it could be anything around $6 million, based on previous trends, with the 2024 champions to get approximately $2.4 million and runners up $1.56 million.
