VP Kamala Harris invites some of most powerful women in sports to celebrate

Vice President Kamala Harris hosted dozens of the most powerful women in sports at her residence Wednesday, with a list of guests that included a league commissioner, team owners, athletic directors and athletes.

The event was a Women's History Month Celebration in collaboration with the Women's Sports Foundation. WSF founder Billie Jean King was also in attendance.

In her remarks, Harris spoke of how critical equitable opportunities in sports are for developing strong young women.

“The work you do every day benefits people regardless of their gender,” Harris said, adding some advice her mother gave her. “My mother would always say, ‘You may be the first, but make sure you are not the last.’ Never let anyone tell you who you are. You tell them who you are. That’s the spirit behind this work.”

Among the invited guests: Scout Bassett, Paralympian & President, Women’s Sports Foundation; Jessica Berman, commissioner, National Women’s Soccer League; Nikki Fargas, president, Las Vegas Aces; Darcie Kassewitz, owner, Tampa Bay Bucaneers; Francie Gottsegen, president, North Carolina Courage; and Renee Montgomery, owner, Atlanta Dream.

Several of the attendees shared their selfies from Harris' residence celebrating the day.
