Vin Scully says farewell to Dodgers fans and baseball in moving speech

If Vin Scully’s impending retirement hadn’t sunk in before Friday night, it certainly has after he penned a touching letter and then delivered a moving farewell speech in front of an appreciative Dodger Stadium crowd.

The maestro of the microphone was treated to a spectacular video tribute covering just some of the great moments of his career. Because covering all of them would have taken a month. He was then greeted by a three-minute standing ovation, before hitting his anticipated speech out of the ballpark in a way only Vin Scully could.

Here’s the full speech:

Did you make it through that with dry eyes?

What stood out, as always, is Scully’s humble nature. It’s his passion to paint a picture with his words and to feed off the energy of the crowd. But it’s never his intent to be the center of attention. Sometimes he even seems uncomfortable in that role, but that’s when he turns on his underrated sense of humor.

He’s not only the complete sports broadcasting package, he’s the guy you want to hang out with at the bar or the ballpark and just talk with for hours. You know you’ll always leave that conversation a little smarter and definitely entertained.

After Friday’s broadcast, we again came away informed and certainly entertained. We also came away moved and humbled by the love, respect and appreciation in Scully’s heart, soul and his iconic voice.
