Sunday Night Football: Broncos rally with late Courtland Sutton touchdown to get past Josh Dobbs, Vikings

The Denver Broncos scored their only touchdown of the night at the perfect time.

The Broncos, after trailing Josh Dobbs and the Minnesota Vikings nearly the entire way on Sunday night in Colorado, mounted an incredible game-winning drive down the stretch to grab the 21-20 win. Russell Wilson hit Courtland Sutton for a 16-yard touchdown in the back corner of the end zone for a touchdown with just more than one minute left.

That put the Broncos up by a point, as their two-point conversion attempt failed. Though the Vikings had one last chance, the Broncos got the stop and sealed the one-point win. That snapped what was a five-game win streak for the Vikings, and pushed the Broncos’ win streak to four games.

After a slow start, the Vikings took the lead early in the second quarter on a 3-yard pass from Dobbs to Josh Oliver for the first touchdown of the night. That put them up 7-3 after a Broncos field goal in the first 15 minutes. The Broncos slowly chipped away at that lead, which the Vikings extended after a Greg Joseph field goal, and entered the locker room down just a single point.

Dobbs, though, finally pushed the Vikings back in control midway through the third quarter on a wild 10-yard scramble that led to him diving into the end zone.

Though Dobbs threw an interception in the fourth quarter and put the Broncos in incredible position to finally score a touchdown, the Vikings stopped Denver once again. Will Lutz kicked his fifth field goal of the night, bringing Minnesota's lead back to just two points.

Dobbs and the Vikings then mounted a wild drive complete with a fourth-and-inches sneak and a perfect fake punt, but it stalled out down in the red zone after more than seven minutes. The Vikings kicked a field goal to push their lead back to five, which gave the Broncos one last chance. That's when Wilson and Sutton connected in the end zone for the touchdown and eventually the win.

Dobbs went 20-of-32 for 221 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Alexander Mattison had 81 rushing yards on 18 carries, and T.J. Hockenson had 55 yards on four catches for the Vikings.

Wilson finished throwing 27-of-35 for 259 yards with a touchdown in the win. Javonte Williams had 37 yards on 11 carries, and Sutton had 66 yards on four catches to go with his game-winning touchdown.

The Broncos had a slightly smaller three-game winning streak on the line on Sunday night. After a truly putrid 2022 season, no one was surprised when Denver was 1-5 through their first six games. But against a less-than-stellar Packers team in Week 7, they broke through with a 19-17 win. The next week they absolutely stunned the Chiefs 24-9, and then eked out a Week 10 victory over the Bills on a walk-off field goal. The Broncos have definitely felt great this week, and they deserved to.
