Shohei Ohtani will take part in 2021 Home Run Derby at Coors Field

Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani can really do it all. He ranks third in MLB with 19 home runs, has a 2.70 ERA and is considered one of the frontrunners for the American League MVP award.

As if that weren't enough, Ohtani will look to add yet another significant accomplishment to his already impressive resume: Home Run Derby champion.

That's right, Ohtani will compete in the Home Run Derby at Coors Field in July, making him the first Japanese-born player to take part in the 35-year-old event, per the Associated Press.

That should come as fantastic news for baseball fans. Ohtani has been one of the game's biggest stories this season. He's finally healthy enough to show off his two-way ability, and it's made him one of the best young players in baseball.

While Ohtani was regarded more for his pitching when he decided to come to MLB, he's grown exponentially as a hitter in three seasons. Ohtani has some of the best raw power in the game, and has put that on display in 2021 with some incredible home runs.

If Ohtani can hit a ball 470 feet at normal altitude, imagine what he's going to do to center-cut, batting-practice fastballs at Coors Field. A 500-foot home run doesn't seem out of the question.

With Ohtani officially locked in, MLB fans will eagerly await the rest of the participants. Pete Alonso and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. put on a show at the event in 2019, and both players should get the invite in 2021. Players like Ronald Acuña Jr., Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Giancarlo Stanton are all possibilities to take part in the event as well, making it potentially one of the most exciting Home Run Derby fields of all time.
