You really need to watch the British Open on Saturday

Look, we’re all friends here, and friends don’t generally tell each other what to do, but we’re telling you this: you must watch the British Open Saturday. Stagger to the couch, put off the housework, tell the spouse and kids to go elsewhere for awhile … whatever your situation, get to a TV and watch the coverage from Carnoustie.

Why? Because the early Saturday scores are low, friend, and hours before the leaders would even reach the first tee, this had the makings of a shootout we don’t often see in major golf.

Let’s start with Justin Rose, who’s struggled at British Opens throughout his career. Not on Saturday! He kicked off the day with a seven-under 64 that put him just two shots off the lead of Kevin Kisner and Zach Johnson. Not bad for a guy that needed a birdie to make the cut. Right behind him, Yusaku Miyazato turned in a six-under card and finished the day at -3, and multiple other players clawed their way up the leaderboard.

As of 9:00 a.m. Eastern, 26 of the 55 players on the course were under par on the day, and only seven were playing at worse than 1-over on the day. This, after the course completely throttled the field the first two days; the aggregate score on Day 1 was +337, and Day 2 was +280. As of 7:45 a.m., the aggregate was -23.

What’s changed? Well, the weather, of course. Between gentle winds, warm skies and soft greens, Carnoustie is a lot more predictable and gettable on Saturday. If the conditions hold up — and they’re supposed to — we could be in for some deep lows from the leaders. Will Kisner and Johnson hold their lead? Could Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson make a run? Who knows?

Sure, we want our majors to be tough, and our British Opens to be wet, windy and nasty, but every once in awhile a good old-fashioned clambake birdiefest is fun too.
