In the current Premier League climate, it is accepted that six teams hold a hegemony over the top of the league.

Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have become the “Big Six,” who have condemned all other sides to an aspiration no higher than a seventh-place finish.

The problem with the current share of power, however, is that there are too many sharks in the Champions-League-qualification tank.

Two of the major players will miss out on the lucrative prospect of Champions League qualification—which could have a devastating financial repercussions.

(Of course, one of the teams, Arsenal, also has a Champions League lifeline if they claim the Europa League this season. But Arsene Wenger’s reign has always been defined by a top-four finish).
