Police will use controversial live facial recognition technology to scan crowds in Cardiff city centre for the start of Beyonce's UK tour.

The pop sensation will perform at the capital's Principality Stadium as part of her Renaissance World Tour - her first in seven years.

South Wales Police confirmed on Tuesday they will be using live facial recognition technology "to support the policing" of the concert.

The force said facial recognition is not a condition of entry and it will not be in use at the stadium.

It comes after it hailed the technology as "a force for good" last month.

The practice has previously faced opposition from campaigners who say victims and potential witnesses could be placed on police watchlists.

Roads will be 'very busy' for Beyonce visit

Commuters have also been urged to plan ahead for travel disruption around the concert.

Cardiff city centre will be closed from 4pm until midnight, the council has confirmed.

Officials expect the M4 and surrounding trunk roads to be "very busy".

Those who are attending the concert have been advised to arrive at the stadium early to avoid disappointment.

Gates open to the public at 5pm.

After her Cardiff performance, Beyonce will be performing in Edinburgh on Saturday before she travels to Sunderland and then to London - where she will perform five concerts at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
