We regret to inform you that NHL controversy magnet Tom Wilson is back at it again.

Wilson, who has been suspended five times throughout his career for dirty play, delivered another questionable hit on Tuesday evening, landing what appeared to be a knee-on-knee blow on Calgary Flames star Johnny Gaudreau.

Gaudreau — who leads the NHL in primary assists — was slow to get up but Flames general manager Brad Treliving revealed Wednesday that the star forward was fine, and they clipped skates, as opposed to being involved in a knee-on-knee collision.

Here is the play in question:

Wilson wasn’t penalized on the play and therefore seems unlikely to be subject to supplementary discipline from the league office.

Throughout the course of his career, the Washington Capitals enforcer has eroded the benefit of the doubt, as his penchant for late, blindside hits has overshadowed his genuine ability to contribute in a top-six scoring role. Wilson has recorded 18 goals and 39 points in 54 games and was named as Alexander Ovechkin’s replacement at this year’s NHL All-Star Game.

Last season, Wilson hospitalized Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo after boarding him with a hit to the head, earning a seven-game suspension. In a separate incident, the 27-year-old sucker-punched then-Rangers forward Pavel Buchnevich, then ripped off Artemi Panarin’s helmet and slammed him into the ice. Panarin suffered a season-ending injury as a result.

Do you think this latest incident with Gaudreau was a dirty hit, or just poor coincidental timing from a player with a long history of attempting to injure his opponents?

Flames fans weighed in on social media, and were unsurprisingly ruthless. We'd share more reaction, but most of it was NSFW. Here's a brief sampling.
