The NHL Evening Skate for Jan. 14

Heading into this evening’s action, here are the day’s top NHL storylines:

Oilers front office looks willing to mortgage the future to save their jobs

This is not a team that’s a piece or two away from a title. Adding to the 2018-19 Oilers at the expense of future seasons would be borderline unconscionable and yet apparently that’s the way the team is leaning. [Chiarelli’s in survival mode]

Why are teams lining up to acquire Wayne Simmonds?

The praise being heaped on Simmonds indicates that the market for him over the next several weeks is going to be quite high, probably because a lot of people think of 30-year-old Simmonds as being more like 26-year-old Simmonds: a guy who’s going to score you 30 goals and put up 50-plus points with ease, plus drive possession a little bit. [Lambert’s 31 takes]

Defenseman Josh Gorges retires after 13 NHL seasons

The 34-year-old announced his decision Monday through the NHL Players’ Association. [Went to Eastern Conference finals twice]

Lamp-lighters

Maple Leafs fans won’t appreciate edits made to the team’s Wikipedia page

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ Wikipedia page was recently subjected to a rather funny amendment, unless you’re one of those Leafs fans who had the stomach to keep reading. [Yup, this story involves the Bruins]

Blue Jackets anthem singer somehow forgets mic, crowd bails him out

Aside from having some nice vocals and of course remembering the words to the songs, all you really need is a microphone. Unfortunately for Columbus Blue Jackets singer Leo Welsh, he forgot his on Sunday. [It made for a nice moment, though]

Pair of antelope among Brent Burns’ epic 1,000th game gift haul

Back on Dec. 27, he played in the 1,000th regular season game of his NHL career and on Saturday it was time to celebrate. Although pre-game ceremonies for reaching this kind of milestone are commonplace, Burns’ before the Sharks hosted the Ottawa Senators had a few twists as unique as he is. [Adding to the ranch]

Game of the night

Montreal Canadiens at Boston Bruins

One of the league’s fiercest rivalries will be on full display tonight at TD Garden. The Canadiens and Bruins have met 745 times in their histories with Montreal winning 361 of those contests. With Montreal (24-17-5) currently in the Eastern Conference’s second wild card spot, one point up on the Buffalo Sabres, tonight’s game will be an important one as the playoffs continue to get closer. Boston (26-15-4) sits third in the Atlantic division. Look for Max Domi of the Canadiens to attempt to break out of his scoring slump. He hasn’t found the back of the net since Dec. 9 against the Chicago Blackhawks. That’s 16 straight games without a goal. [Follow on Yahoo Sports]
