The Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers battled on Tuesday night in the first-ever meeting between Nos. 1 picks and franchise players Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews and … well, it was sort of a letdown.

Neither player tallied a point in the game. Matthews was a minus-1 in 19:28 despite six shots on goal. McDavid as a minus-2 in 22:46 with four shots on goal. Bummer.

One of those goals scored with McDavid on the ice? The overtime game-winner by Nazem Kadri, in which he outmuscled McDavid for the puck and ended the game just 12 seconds into the extra session.

McDavid immediately went to the referee to complain about some nefarious behavior from Kadri, but it didn’t matter: The Leafs won the showdown, 3-2, as Kadri scored two goals on “Connor vs. Auston Night.”

As for McDavid, who was beaten for the game-winner? “He passionately approached the game and gave us everything he had,” said Oilers coach Todd McLellan.

As for the game-winner? “The League will have a good example of a hold to look at,” said McLellan.

These grapes, they are so sour!
