Meghan Markle, Prince Harry had surprise run-in while hiking in Canada

Meghan Markle to the rescue!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been spending their first holiday season as a family of three in Canada, where the couple has been staying during their six-week break from public life. While many Vancouver Island locals have reported running into Harry and Meghan during their visit, one couple recently got the surprise of a lifetime after a chance encounter at Horth Hill Regional Park.

Locals Iliya Pavlovic and Asymina Kantorowicz, who spent New Year's day with a picnic at the park, tried to mark the holiday with a selfie when Meghan Markle, unbeknownst to them, spotted them struggling with the selfie stick.

The duchess, who was hiking with Prince Harry and her "Suits" co-star Abigail Spencer, approached the couple and asked if they wanted a photo.

“We’ve been doing this hike on New Year’s Day for the past two years," said Kantorowicz to People. "We took a little picnic out and we were finishing up and trying to get some selfies with the nice backdrop when a woman came up to us and asked if we wanted her to take our photo."

The couple didn't recognize Meghan at first, but then made the connection after spotting Spencer.

“I’m a Suits fan and I first noticed Abigail and then I looked up and realized it was Meghan taking the photo," she continued. "Then I looked back at the group and realized Prince Harry was there too!”

Kantorowicz added: “The only thing I could think to say to her was, ‘There’s only so much that selfie sticks can do.’ She laughed and said something like, ‘We’ll have to take a good photo then,’ and then Harry said, ‘No pressure.’"

Pavlovic and Kantorowicz told CTV News that they didn't want to make a big deal of the encounter, but that the duchess was very "down to earth."

"She seemed happy and down to earth — she was just enjoying her New Year’s hike with her husband and friend," Kantorowicz said. "She and Harry seemed really happy — like a happy newly married couple. I wish baby Archie had been there!"
