Bianca Andreescu defeats Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5 for historic US Open title

BIANCA ANDREESCU WINS THE US OPEN!

BIANCA ANDREESCU HAS BECOME THE FIRST CANADIAN TO WIN A GRAND SLAM SINGLES TITLE, DEFEATING SERENA WILLIAMS 6-3, 7-5.

Serving at 30-40, Serena sends in a second serve that’s asking to be hit, and Bianca hammers a forehand down the line that Serena can’t get to. Hands to the head, the racquet drops, history is made! What a moment for Bianca, what a moment for Canada!

After hugging Serena at the net, Bianca lays flat in the centre of the Arthur Ashe stadium soaking it all in.

What. A. Match.

Huge hold from Bianca for her confidence. She lets out a huge ‘C’mon!’ at the end of the game and hopefully all the nerves that got to her with it. Serena to serve to stay in the US Open.

And we’re level in the second set

5-all as Bianca’s going to need something special to move back ahead. Serena has all the momentum and the crowd at Arthur Ashe is at another level.

Serena breaks again

Crazy. Hard not to think nerves got to Bianca there. Serena easily takes advantage and now serves to level the second set at 5-5.

What should be backhand winner at the net sails wide and Serena has a huge opportunity to get back on level terms in the second set.

Bianca serves for the match once more...

Serena breaks!

Incredible toughness from Serena and she now trails 5-2 in the second set.

Serena saves championship point with that incredible forehand winner down the line and force deuce.

Serena’s unraveling. This is incredible.

We are this close to witnessing the first Canadian singles Grand Slam title. Bianca’s unrelenting desire keeps surfacing and Serena is the one starting crumble under pressure. She strangely misjudges a looping shot from Bianca to hand the teenager a 4-1 lead.

3-1 Bianca

And now she’s three games away. After Serena has a lucky net cord to break Bianca’s serve, Andreescu shows tremendous courage to break right back. Did I say she’s THREE GAMES AWAY?

And incredibly, Andreescu gets the first break of the second set. Four games away now.

First set

BIANCA ANDREESCU BREAKS SERENA AGAIN TO WIN THE FIRST SET 6-3

Serena has played her best match so far but Bianca is simply overmatching her right now. Incredible stuff from the Canadian teen. She’s one set away from Canadian history.

The serve was the big question mark coming in and Bianca made 84 percent of her first serves in the first set. Incredible.

5-3 Bianca

Excellent response from Andreescu to hold after Williams earned her first break point opportunity. The Canadian responds with an ace, and then closes it out. One game from the first set.

4-3 Bianca

An extended game that goes over 10 minutes! What drama. Bianca has several chances to break but Serena comes up with the goods each time before the crowd gives an ovation after the American finally earns game point. She holds serve and a fist pump follows. Big hold that.

4-2 Bianca

You can feel how tense the atmosphere is right now. It feels as though Serena thinks she needs this first set. And who can blame her, in her last three Grand Slam finals, she hasn’t managed to win a single set. The early break has pushed her to go for more, but Bianca has maintained her advantage thus far.

3-1 Bianca

Five backhand errors for Serena now, Bianca has none. Easy hold for the Canadian.

2-0 Bianca

After Serena creates an opening at 15-30, Bianca buckles down as she has all tournament and pulls through to consolidate her break.

1-0 Bianca

Andreescu won the toss and elected to have Serena serve first and what a decision it proves to be. Two unforced errors during rallies and a pair of double-faults hand Andreescu the opening game. Nerves early from the 23-time Grand Slam champ?

Pre-match

A nice cheer for Andreescu as she enters the court but it’s nothing compared to the massive ovation for Serena when she walks through. No prizes for guessing who the crowd will be with today.

The Canadian goes for history, looking to become the first singles Grand Slam champion from the nation. Andreescu is already the first US Open singles finalist from Canada, and only the nation’s third singles finalist after Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic.

Andreescu has made a name for herself in big matches this year, compiling a 7-0 record in matches against the WTA’s Top 10 and also winning titles in Indian Wells and Toronto.

Serena’s resume needs no introduction; the greatest-of-all-time is looking to tie Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles championships. She has lost her last three major finals, though — the 2018 Wimbledon final to Angelique Kerber, the 2018 US Open to Naomi Osaka, and the 2019 Wimbledon final to Simona Halep.
