Hockey players aren’t generally known for their ability to jump, but if you give them a good enough scare, there are some whose heads nearly hit the ceiling.

The Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs recently decided to celebrate Halloween by torturing some of their players. Both squads have presented their fanbases with plenty of entertainment on the ice so far this season. Therefore, this added off-ice tomfoolery is a nice bonus.

Carolina’s Justin Williams did some clowning around

To get his teammates in the spirit of the season, Hurricanes’ captain Justin Williams donned a creepy clown mask and jumped out from behind objects in a hallway. It’s a simple, tried-and-true formula for spooky success. Clowns are scary AF and people love seeing others at their most vulnerable right after a good scare.

Right off the bat, you have to love the reaction of 35-year-old goaltender Curtis McElhinney. After he spooks, he simply says, “I’m too old for that stuff.” Gold.

Teuvo Teravainen’s yelp is fantastic. There’s also a moment of hesitation that follows where it looks like he’s trying to figure out who is behind the mask or debating if he should throw a punch.

The highlight is the combination of Warren Foegele and Micheal Ferland, though. Based on the video and the multiple angles of their reactions, there’s a good chance that these two needed to change their pants after falling victim to Williams’ shenanigans.

From the outside looking in, you really have to appreciate the culture that Williams and the rest of the veterans in Carolina are nurturing. Between videos like this and the team’s lighthearted celebrations after wins, they’ve been focused on fun and it seems to be working early in the season.

The Leafs couldn’t ‘bear’ Carlton’s scares

Toronto’s mascot Carlton the Bear was the centrepiece of a similar prank. Unfortunately, their video was only released within the walls of Scotiabank Arena during the Leafs recent contest against the Calgary Flames. Fortunately, a fan took a video of the jumbotron while it was playing and shared it with the world.

Thanks @honeykadri. Due to your selfless act, we, the regular folk, get to enjoy what ensued as well.

As the tweet mentions, we sadly don’t get to see Mr. Marner’s reaction to this situation. (We get it @honeykadri, you got to go to the game and we didn’t. Rub it in.)

There’s no denying it, though. Carlton was able to get a bunch of players to buckle. Kasperi Kapanen and Travis Dermott’s disappointment in themselves is just great. Meanwhile, watching Andreas Johnsson run halfway to Sweden is money.

The best reaction of them is all is that of Auston Matthews, though. He shrieks like most Toronto fans when they found out the young superstar would be out for a minimum of four weeks with a shoulder injury.

Overall, this is some great work by both organizations. Fans get to enjoy a laugh and all that had to be sacrificed was these players feeling safe while walking around their places of employment.
