Kevin Pillar’s injury after this incredible catch was much scarier than initially thought.

What appeared to be just a routine joint sprain in his shoulder wound up turning into a pretty significant health scare for Kevin Pillar.

The Blue Jays outfielder, who was injured in Saturday’s game against the Red Sox after laying out for another one of his jaw-dropping catches, was immediately pulled from the game before he was placed on the 10-day DL on Sunday morning. What we didn’t know at the time is that Pillar was reportedly rushed to the emergency room with a very serious injury.

Pillar is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks with a sternoclavicular joint sprain, a collarbone injury that could be life threatening if the sprain is backwards. Thankfully, Pillar’s sprain was forward.

As Sportsnet‘s Arden Zwelling reports, team doctors from both the Blue Jays and Red Sox tended to Pillar’s injury before it was determined to be an emergency situation. There seemed to be no indication of a serious injury when Pillar stood up after making yesterday’s incredible catch in the bottom of the third inning.

Pillar’s stellar play in the outfield has been one of the few bright spots in Toronto’s disappointing season. His wall-climbing grab on Canada Day is just one of many incredible catches he’s made in 2018.
