Giants' Brian Daboll responds to Malik Nabers' comments: 'I have to do a better job'

If winning cures everything, then losing must be the disease. Given that the New York Giants haven't won a game since early October, things may be getting a little heated at 1925 Giants Drive.

After the Giants' Week 12 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers expressed frustration about his usage and lack of production and pointed specifically at his head coach.

"I started getting the ball when it was 30-0," Nabers told reporters after the game. "What do you want me to do?"

Asked why he didn't get more looks in the first half, the rookie wideout said to ask head coach Brian Daboll.

On Monday morning, Daboll responded to Nabers' comments during his weekly media availability session.

"He's a very competitive individual," Daboll said. "You want to get the ball in his hands and I've got to do a better job of getting the ball in his hands early.

"He's a smart young guy that's very competitive. When you lose like that, it's a frustrating thing, but we've had good communication, as we always have."

When asked whether Nabers' comfort in openly criticizing the head coach was problematic, Daboll remained carefully diplomatic.

"I'll keep our conversations private – myself and (Nabers'). Looking forward to getting ready here on Dallas."

When they met in March at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, Daboll specifically asked Nabers how the receiver handles losing.

"I really hate it," Nabers said at the time. "I hate losing more than I love winning."

Daboll also asked the then-prospect how he dealt with a lack of usage early in games.

"How do I handle it?" Nabers asked. "I handle it pretty tough. Especially being in the offense in the week, putting in the work with the (first-string) offense, getting a lot of plays to be called for me. So if I'm not in those plays and not getting the ball, I'm pretty hard on that."

"Yeah, that's what I'm looking for," Daboll responded at the time. "I want guys that wanna get the ball. And I want guys that hate (expletive) losing. But you gotta learn how to harness that a little bit."

The Giants play the Cowboys on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. ET on Fox.
