The Calgary Flames have signed restricted free agent Yegor Sharangovich to a two-year contract extension one day after acquiring the forward from the New Jersey Devils.

The contract will be worth $3.1 million annually.

"I'm really excited to be part of Calgary for two more years," Sharangovich said in a press release. "It's a really big chance to step up in my career and play better than my last couple years. I'm really excited and can't wait to meet all the players and I can't wait for the start of the season and to start playing in Calgary."

Sharangovich was the main piece the Flames received in exchange for winger Tyler Toffoli, who is entering the final year of his four-year contract with a $4.25M cap hit. Calgary also received a 2023 third-round pick the the deal.

The 25-year-old posted 13 goals and 30 points last season, providing secondary scoring for New Jersey’s bottom-six. It was a small step back in production, as the 2018 fifth-round pick had a career-best 24 goals and 46 points the season prior.

With a potential shakeup in Calgary on the horizon, there should be no shortage of opportunity for Sharangovich to surpass his career highs next season. The Flames are facing an uncertain summer following a trade request from Toffoli and indications from several key players they do not intend to re-up in Calgary once their contract expires at the end of next season. But a number of players who do intend to be with the team next season have already reached out to the Belarusian to welcome him to the team.

"I've already talked with (Nikita Zadorov) about Calgary, about the team," Sharangovich said. "He's already helping me find a house in Calgary.

"Not only Zadorov texted me, but it's already a couple guys — (Jonathan) Huberdeau, (Rasmus) Andersson. They both (reached out) and said, 'Congratulations and I can't wait to meet you in Calgary.'"

Toffoli is coming off a career season where he posted 34 goals and 73 points. The 31-year-old was rumoured to be among several Flames discontent with the team, and he’s joining a Devils team that is firmly poised to be a contender next year.
