Danny Green can't say if Kawhi Leonard stays or goes

It’s been less than two weeks since the Toronto Raptors won their first title in franchise history. As Canada and the basketball world have been letting that settle in, the mood has started to shift from celebration to concern.

Ever since he was traded from the San Antonio Spurs last summer, the biggest question whenever Kawhi Leonard’s name comes up has to do with whether or not he’ll stay north of the border for more than one season. Now that the Raptors have a championship and Kawhi his second NBA Finals MVP, chatter on the topic has ramped up once again.

Danny Green, the self-proclaimed “Other Guy” in the Leonard trade, gave his thoughts on the situation with NBA free agency around the corner during a recent episode of his podcast “Inside the Green Room.”

“I just think that people are so excited about it that they never want to come down,” Green — who is also looking for a new contract — said. “You know, they’re enjoying the high and they’re just like, you know what, ‘we gotta keep this team together’ (and) it starts with him (Kawhi).

“So, they’ll go to anybody. Whatever you guys can do to keep him happy. Keep him here. Danny, keep... He’s a grown-ass man. I can’t get my little brothers to do (stuff). How am I going to get Kawhi to do something? I have no say. It’s his own decision...”

Then, the tone of the conversation shifted as the 32-year-old shooting guard shed a bit of light on his NBA future.

“I’m worried about me,” he said. “For sure, I would love to play alongside the guy and especially here. It would be great. But, I can’t worry... I have other things to worry about...”

Until Green and Leonard put their signatures on dotted lines (wherever that may be), it appears that all we can do is continue to speculate what the coming days will bring.
