Chiefs’ Jerick McKinnon was heckled by Steelers fans in pregame but he had last laugh
The Chiefs running backs and wide receivers were warming up for Sunday night’s AFC Wild Card Game by returning kicks and they were within earshot of some Steelers fans at Arrowhead Stadium.
Those with the Terrible Towels were giving the Chiefs players a hard time. Running back Jerrick McKinnon returned fire, and the Steelers fans began heckling McKinnon.
‘You never play!”
“You never do anything!”
“Why are you yelling at us?”
McKinnon made them eat their words a short time later, as he rushed for 61 yards in 12 attempts, the most of any Chiefs runner. He also caught a game-high six passes for 81 yards and a touchdown.
It’s said revenge is a dish best served cold, and it was a chilly night at Arrowhead Stadium as McKinnon quieted the Steelers fans.
James Palmer of the NFL Network recounted this story on Tuesday.
“I’ll take you back to Sunday night. I’m standing in the end zone and the Chiefs skill players run out on the field to return some punts pregame and Jerick McKinnon, their running back, is just barking at the Steelers fans in the first couple of rows, and I start hearing the Steelers fans yelling at McKinnon going, ‘You never play! You never do anything? Why are you yelling at us?’ Palmer recalled.
“Well, Jerick McKinnon played in this game. He had 142 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown, and he was their featured back in this game.”
Here is the clip:
What did #chiefs RB Jerick McKinnon’s 142 scrimmage yards tell us about KC’s offense? They have depth and their OL is playing well. And a funny story about Steelers fans and McKinnon from pregame. . My report on NFL NOW on @nflnetwork pic.twitter.com/rD1COyfLF8
