Through 3 games, Kyler Murray's stats are eerily similar to Baker Mayfield's Heisman-winning season

Kyler Murray’s first (and probably only) season as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback is off to a great start.

Murray was 21-of-29 for 348 yards and three touchdowns in the Sooners’ 37-27 win over Iowa State on Saturday. OU improved to 3-0 with the win, and Murray now has 863 passing yards, 169 rushing yards and 10 total touchdowns.

That’s 1,032 total yards. And as pointed out by ESPN’s David Hale, Murray is just a single yard behind Baker Mayfield’s three-game total to start his Heisman Trophy winning season. Mayfield had 1,046 passing yards, minus-13 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns to start the 2017 campaign.

Yep, Murray in his first year as a collegiate starter is just one yard off the pace of the first pick in the NFL draft.

How impressive is that?

Murray is answering questions about his passing ability

Entering the season, there was a limited sample size of Murray’s ability.

Murray was Mayfield’s backup in 2017 and competed with Austin Kendall for the starting job entering the year. In 2017, Murray completed 18-of-21 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 142 yards. He started against West Virginia with Mayfield suspended to begin the game and broke off a 66-yard run on the game’s first play.

Murray was a highly-touted recruit out of Allen, Texas, and started his career at Texas A&M. As a true freshman in 2015 for the Aggies, Murray made three starts and threw for 686 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 59.5 percent of his passes. He added 335 yards and a touchdown rushing.

Entering 2018, everybody knew what kind of athlete Murray is, but there were some questions about how good of a passer he would be. So far, he has looked the part of a quarterback who can make all of the throws. His first touchdown on Saturday was a perfect example.

Marquise Brown ran a deep post and Murray, even with the pocket collapsing, stepped up and delivered a beautiful deep ball for a 75-yard score.

Mayfield was a prolifically efficient passer. With a 67.1 completion percentage (49/73) so far, Murray is following in his footsteps nicely.

This will likely be Murray’s only season as OU’s starting QB

Murray is a redshirt junior this season, meaning he could return to the gridiron for the Sooners next fall. But it’s pretty much certain that he won’t be back next fall. And it’s not because he will be playing in the NFL.

Murray is also an awesome baseball player and was selected No. 9 overall by the Oakland Athletics in the MLB draft. The A’s signed Murray to a deal that included a $4.66 million signing bonus. As part of the agreement, the A’s allowed Murray to play football in 2018 before focusing on baseball full-time. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Murray’s contract with the A’s includes an insurance policy in case he gets hurt playing football.

A slugging outfielder, the 5-foot-11, 195-pound Murray hit .296 with 10 home runs and 47 runs batted in for OU last season.
