SpiderMable finds and saves 'captured' Andrew Ference in heartwarming scene (Photos)

Kidnapped and tied up at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, Edmonton Oilers captain Andrew Ference needed a hero to save him.

Enter SpiderMable, who rescued the defenseman Monday as part of an organized search, set up by The Children’s Wish Foundation.

The above photo is of SpiderMable, Ference and Oilers rookie Connor McDavid.

SpiderMable is Mable Tooke, a 6-year-old who has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia for the last two years.

The Children’s Wish Foundation works with communities to “provide children with life threatening illnesses the opportunity to realize their most heartfelt wish. By creating unique, meaningful experiences, Children's Wish enhances quality of life for these courageous children and their families.”

For some background on Tooke, here is a snippet from a piece in the Edmonton Journal:

Mable’s parents said they aren’t worried about their daughter’s energy running out before the day is over. The six-year-old girl is known for being spunky, smiling and always on the go, and the day includes lots of breaks and snacks between stops.

Mable was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2013 and is nearing the end of her treatment. Elizabeth LoPresti of the Children’s Wish Foundation said “the prognosis is very good.”

During her treatments, Mable passed the time by reading comic books. Her favourites were Spider-Man issues from the 1960s. She later told the Children’s Wish Foundation that she often imagined fighting crime, Spider-Man-style.

The hunt to save Ference took SpiderMable to the West Edmonton Mall, Galaxyland and then finishing up at the zoo. Here is our running blog of her day. It took up quite a following in Edmonton and across the internet with the hashtag #spidermable.

This is similar to the San Francisco BatKid, when then 5-year-old Miles Scott was cheered throughout the Bay Area while dressed as Batman a couple of years ago.

Scott was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia when he was 20 months old.

Ference’s family was pleased that SpiderMable came to the rescue.
