Gustav Nyquist of the Detroit Red Wings has emerged as a young star in the NHL following back-to-back 25-goal-plus seasons and couple of highlight-reel tallies.

At the same time, there’s a different Nyquist becoming a star right now in the thoroughbred world.

Two-year old colt Nyquist won Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup $2 million Juvenile race at Keeneland race track in Kentucky, pushing his record to 5-0-0.

Trained by Doug O’Neill, who helped I’ll Have Another win the first two legs of the 2012 Triple Crown, Nyquist is owned by Red Wings fan Paul Reddam, who has had several horses in his stable over the years named after players like Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Kronwall and Mrazek.

Nyquist’s success at the end of 2015 has created some buzz that could lead to him becoming a favorite for next May's Kentucky Derby, but Reddam isn’t looking that far ahead just yet.

From Bob Duff of the Windsor Star:

“I don’t want to boil over about the Kentucky Derby because it’s a long way off,” Reddam said. “As a two year old it’s a lot like a junior in hockey and saying he’s going to be the next superstar in the NHL.

“Sometimes that works out and sometimes it doesn’t.”

Nyquist, the hockey player, is aware of the horse and honored to be named after a budding success story. And as he told Duff, he has one piece of advice for his namesake.

“Hopefully the horse keeps running fast.”
