Fan-built Edmonton Oilers LEGO arena is incredible, including Gretzky statue (Video)

One of the greatest things I witnessed in the London Olympics involved 100,000 LEGOs. It was a recreation of the Olympic Stadium, weighing 220 pounds and produced with unbelievable detail.

As impressive as that was, this LEGO project of a fan-created new Edmonton Oilers arena is a different kind of awesome. Mainly because it was a family affair: Built by a Red Deer, Alberta family, working together to give the Oilers the arena that the city wasn’t willing to give them for years.

“Brick Arena” was created by Red Deer’s Joel Cadieux and his children – Noah, 10, Dallis, eight, Elijah, seven and Davis, four – using 15,000 bricks, according to the Red Deer Advocate (via CBS Sports Eye On Hockey). The CBC caught up with the family for this look at the arena:

The details on this thing are just awesome: The Wayne Gretzky statue out front, the Oilers “Green Men” harassing someone in the penalty box, the Jumbotron … and yes, the fan using the bathroom wall to brace him as he sends some arena beer back out to sea.

About the only unrealistic thing about the piece is the Oilers hoisting the Stanley Cup. Then again, with LEGOs, Edmonton can finally build a solid defense …
