Peyton Manning sees pizza-related benefits from Colorado's new laws

Peyton Manning is probably the most oft-interviewed NFL player in the game, and it's because he's a good, thoughtful quote no matter what the subject. Peter King took on the challenge of asking Manning questions he'd never been asked, and the result was an interesting and far-ranging, though not particularly controversial, Q&A in King's MMQB.

Best moment: Manning, who owns interest in Papa John's franchises, drops a broad reference to Colorado's new legalized-marijuana laws: "There’s some different laws out here in Colorado," Manning said, answering a question about his political awareness. "Pizza business is pretty good out here, believe it or not, due to some recent law changes." Why, Peyton, WHATEVER COULD YOU MEAN?

The rest of the questions don't cut too deep, but Manning still offers some insight. He doesn't believe that he has it in him to play until he's 45 (he's now 38) the way Tom Brady and Drew Brees hope to. "Every March, I do this physical and we take a look at it," Manning says. "It’s the perfect time, because it says, ‘Hey, everything looks good.’ And it also kind of allows me to go, Do I still wanna go through a lifting, offseason schedule again? I do my neck check, but I do my heart check as well, my desire check. I like it when my heart says, ‘Hey, let’s keep this going.’"

Manning also notes that he tries to keep abreast of current events outside of football, and that the team shows both CNN and Fox News in the cafeteria ("We’ve usually got one of each to kind of balance it out," he laughs). Manning also actively votes, which is a bit easier when you know many of the top candidates by first name.

His advice to young quarterbacks is applicable to, well, anyone: "Don’t ever go to a meeting to watch a practice or a game without having already watched it by yourself," and "To ever watch film without a pen and paper in your hand is a complete waste of time."

"If you’re in the QB room and you leave the door open so [coaches] can see you in there, don’t," Manning says. "Shut the door. You ought to have the door shut. Whether they know you’re in there or not, they’re gonna know by the way you play out on the field. Don’t go showing off." That's pretty solid advice all the way around.

It's worth noting that King didn't ask Manning about any of the NFL's current problems, because this particular interview was conducted in late August before everything in the league went straight to hell. We can debate whether King would have asked Manning about Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, et al., and we can also debate whether Manning would have answered, or dodged the question a la Brady. He'll be asked soon enough, though.
