FBI could swap headquarters with Redskins if Redskins move back to Washington

As NFL trades go, this might be the best one we've heard since Carroll Rosenbloom traded the Baltimore Colts to Robert Irsay in exchange for the Los Angeles Rams in a tax-free barter back in 1972. According to D.C. Council Finance and Revenue Chairman Jack Evans, some in the nation's capital support a swap that would move the FBI's headquarters to Prince George's County, Md., if the Washington Redskins would be willing to move their stadium from PG County back to D.C. proper.

In fact, reports indicate that D.C. officials may have already forwarded an offer that would put the FBI in Prince George's County if the Redskins could (and would be willing to) break their lease.

The idea, which has been tossed around for a number of years, seems to have some traction, though we're not aware of the Redskins' stance on it. As it stands, the team's lease runs through the year 2027 ... though we imagine there would be enough creative ways to break it if the right people were involved.

The Redskins played in D.C. from 1937, when they moved from Boston, until 1997, when FedEx Field opened in Landover, Md. RFK Stadium, the team's former home turf, has since been home to the D.C. United soccer team and (for a time) the Washington Nationals. Moving the team's front office and football operations would seem to be an easier step.

"This would be a very big shot in the arm to downtown Washington to better utilize that space and, God help us, not that building," Greater Washington Board of Trade President Jim Dinegar told NBCWashington.com, which first reported the story. That site also reports that some officials are trying to forward the concept of an even-jurisdiction swap.

Right now, the FBI's HQ has an obvious high-security emphasis that creates "dead space" on Pennsylvania Avenue, blocks from the U.S. Capitol. The FBI wants new digs, and it's looking to the Redskins to see if the two entities might be able to broker a solution. Of course, those in the Redskins' current home aren't too happy about the possibility of losing their sole pro sports franchise for the Men in Black -- especially when it's entirely possible that the FBI might be moving there anyway.

According to the Washington Post, Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker III isn't really in love with the idea at this point, and a spokesperson for the office of D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray was not interested in "fueling this stupidity."

Yeah, but ... this is the home of the filibuster. You just never know.

"Certainly the idea of a switch for the FBI moving to Prince George's County and the Redskins moving back to the city in a brand new stadium at RFK would be something I would certainly be interested in," said D.C. Council member Jack Evans, a longtime supporter of this initiative.

One thing's for sure: As Evans said, "If we're going to give up the FBI, we better get something back for it."

The FBI for RG3? Sounds like a decent trade to us.
