Washington senior left guard Dexter Charles was forced to retire from football after lingering knee injuries, the school announced Monday.

“We’re all very disappointed that Dexter’s injury won’t allow him to continue to play,” coach Chris Petersen said in a statement. “I’m grateful for his dedication and hard work and very pleased that he earned his degree. He’s interested in the coaching profession, and I wish him nothing but the best.”

Charles was the only full-time starter on the line, though Washington does return several players who have starting experience. Junior Jake Eldrenkamp is the most likely replacement at left guard. Even though he has no starting experience, he did play in every 2014 game as a reserve. However, depth now becomes a problem as every other reserve has little to no playing experience.

Charles, who is in his fifth year, started 30 games for the Huskies in the past three seasons.
