Ex-Arkansas RB says he's headed to Kansas, not SMU (Update)

It appears Denzell Evans has had a change of heart. Instead of transferring from Arkansas to SMU, Evans told the Lawrence Journal-World he plans to transfer to Kansas.

The move isn't official yet. Evans is still taking classes at Arkansas in an effort to graduate this summer. If he earns his degree from Arkansas, he would be eligible immediately to play for the Jayhawks with two years remaining.

“It’s as done as it’s gonna be without me signing,” Evans said of attending KU. “I just want to focus on school, develop my game and be ready to go when I touch down in Lawrence.”

Two SEC transfers – ex-LSU wide receiver Trey Quinn and ex-Arkansas running back Denzell Evans – are headed to SMU.

Quinn, who announced his intention to leave LSU in February, told NOLA.com that he will play for the Mustangs. Quinn, a 6-foot, 197-pound wide receiver, will have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2016 campaign per NCAA transfer requirements.

Quinn showed flashes during his time at LSU but saw his production fall off in 2015. As a true freshman in 2014, Quinn played in all 13 games, starting seven, and caught 17 passes for 193 yards. Quinn played in every game in 2015, but had only five catches for 83 yards.

The Lake Charles, Louisiana, native was a top 75 recruit in the 2014 class who should be a nice fit in Morris’ fast-paced system.

Unlike Quinn, Evans, who confirmed his decision to SMU's Rivals.com affiliate, should be able to suit up immediately as a graduate transfer for the Mustangs. When announcing Evans' decision to transfer, Arkansas coach Bret Bielema told reporters the running back was on pace to graduate this summer.

After redshirting his first season in 2013, Evans appeared in 15 games over the past two years for the Razorbacks, mostly on special teams. The 5-foot-11, 217-pound Evans also totaled 13 carries for 84 yards at Arkansas. 

At SMU, Evans, a native of Houston, will have two years of eligibility remaining. The former three-star prospect had a scholarship offer from the Mustangs coming out of high school in the 2013 class.
