Former Baby Genius triplets Myles, Leo and Gerry Fitzgerald shipped to Victoria
Twins on the same team are a rarity in hockey, but not particularly unheard of. Daniel and Henrik Sedin went No. 2 and No. 3 in the 1999 NHL Draft to the Vancouver Canucks, while Matt and Ryan Rupert were big factors in the London Knights' OHL title this past season.
But triplets?
Leo, Gerry and Myles Fitzgerald have followed a fun career arc after being born in Port Alberni, B.C., in 1993. First, they got their start playing twins Sly and Wint in the unfortunate 1999 film Baby Geniuses. Apparently, hockey was next. Ten years later, the triplets were invited to the training camp of the Jr. A BCHL Victoria Grizzlies. Myles and Leo later debuted that season with rival Nanaimo Clippers as 16-year-olds, scoring two goals in 15 games combined. Gerry was with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks, but was moved to Nanaimo for the following season.
That summer, after breakout campaigns, the three were traded to the Prince George Spruce Kings—all in the same deal—and again on Thursday, the three were moved again, their career coming full circle as they were shipped back to Victoria in a six player trade.
The Fitzgerald's are no strangers to [general manager Bill] Bestwick and Island Junior Hockey supporters as all three entered the BCHL under his guidance with the Nanaimo Clippers during the 2010-2011 season.
Individually each Fitzgerald is a top player in the BCHL and collectively they are dynamic, skilled players that compete and entertain during every single shift," stated Bestwick.
In their first two BCHL seasons the Fitzgerald's have combined for 77 goals and 104 assists during 169 games played. "These guys love the game and are as durable as any players in the BCHL. I expect them to generate offense and reach a point a game status or more," said Bestwick. [Island Sports News]
Make it twice in consecutive seasons that a set of triplets, who all play on the same line, mind you, have been traded together.
The offensive production of the three is pretty strong. On Prince George's third line last season, Myles was fifth on the team with 20 goals, while Gerry had 17 and Leo 15. Point-a-game status may be in the cards, maybe not, but it depends a lot on their growth.
Players grow a lot in their mid-to-late teens (who knew?) but the Fitzgeralds are pretty small. They were listed at 5'7" and 150 lbs in last season's trade and are now listed at 5'8" 155, so unless they have a big growth spurt in them, I wouldn't expect them to develop beyond reasonably good second-line players.
