It's a good thing the Montreal Alouettes aren't going to officially retire Anthony Calvillo's jersey until October 13, as someone wore it recently—the man himself. He didn't wear it in Molson Stadium, though, instead taking to an unmarked grass field with kids from his Montreal neighbourhood. No, the "Bound-For-Street" rules described in The Tim Tebow CFL Chronicles (backstory here) haven't come into play; according to CFL.ca, Calvillo (who officially retiredin January) made a promise to a group of kids he knew to play a game with them in full uniform, and he definitely kept it:

Why, exactly, is pro football's all-time leading passer dressed in full gear playing football with some youngsters from his neighbourhood?

We've been told that he made a promise that he'd one day strap on the pads, don his uniform and lace up his cleats to the aforementioned neighbourhood crew...and you better believe that AC is a man of his word.

Here's another shot of Calvillo in action with the kids:

That's pretty awesome of pro football's all-time leading passer to suit up and play with a group of kids, but it illustrates Calvillo's heart for the community. He lives in Montreal and has been a key figure in many of the Alouettes' charitable efforts, and he's been a fantastic ambassador for the CFL both on and off the field, as the tributes at his retirement show. The league as a whole has done great things for kids' football, including a new initiative with Reebok they're formally announcing tomorrow, and Calvillo has done terrifc things on that front as well. It's cool to see him take the time to give these kids an experience they'll never forget.

What's next for Calvillo? Well, he'll be honoured at that big jersey retirement in October, and he's also been working with the Alouettes as a front-office intern. That may translate into a more permanent coaching job at some point once his schedule clears. It's a good thing the Montreal offence has started to come around in recent weeks, though; there were rumours of 44-year-old quarterbacks coach Jeff Garcia stepping in under centre earlier this year when the Alouettes' passing game was struggling, so the sight of Calvillo in pads might have trigged a desire to put him back in. With the Montreal passing game starting to click with Jonathon Crompton, though, the Alouettes can focus on retiring Calvillo's jersey. We'll just make sure to keep it available for future pickup games with kids.
