Welcome to the new 55-Yard Line CFL super power rankings. Every Thursday we'll look back at the previous week and look ahead to the upcoming week, and rank the best teams, quarterbacks or anything else we see fit to rank.

In case you haven't been paying attention, the West Division is playing significantly better than the East Division so far this year. We're approaching Labour Day and the East has four teams with only one win. The East's first-place team, the Argonauts, has three wins -- meanwhile every team in the West has at least five wins.

If the trend continues it could make for an interesting playoffs because of the crossover rule. If the fourth place team in one division has a better record than the third place team in the other, it crosses over and joins that bracket. That's certainly looking like it will be the case this year. We will almost certainly see a West team in the East bracket, not to mention an above-.500 West team perhaps missing the playoffs altogether.

Could we even see an all-West Division Grey Cup game? It has never happened before but it's not out of the question. It means a team from the West heading East and winning two playoff games on the road, not an easy task. But it's not hard to imagine, for example, the Lions finishing fourth and winning games in Hamilton and Toronto to reach the Grey Cup.

There is still a long way to go in the 2014 season but it's hard not to get excited about a potential all-West Grey Cup in Vancouver come November.

Team rankings:

1.

Calgary Stampeders (6-1; Previous: 1) - Still at No. 1 after back-to-back wins, and Jon Cornish is expected to return to the lineup on Sunday. Everything is looking up in Calgary.

2.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-2; Previous: 2) - It wasn't pretty but they beat the lowly Alouettes, thanks mostly to their defence. Defensive end John Chick has been the most dominant defensive player in the league this year.

3.

B.C. Lions (5-3; Previous: 4) - They move up one spot thanks to an impressive road win over the Argonauts, their third win in a row. The biggest problem in B.C. right now is deciding who their starting quarterback is.

4.

Edmonton Eskimos (6-1; Previous: 3) - The Eskimos are a near-perfect 6-1 and winners of two in a row, but we're dropping them based mostly on strength of schedule. They did not play well in Ottawa last week but pulled out a late win.

5.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-3; Previous: 5) - They've lost two in a row after playing on short rest. No excuses this week with the Alouettes in town.

6.

Toronto Argonauts (3-5; Previous: 6) - They went 1-1 in their bizarre two-game week. They were good in a win over the Bombers but the offence stumbled in the loss to the Lions.

7.

Ottawa Redblacks (1-6; Previous: 8) - Four losses in a row now but they move up one spot because they almost beat the Eskimos. The East is so bad moral victories will do for now.

8.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1-6; Previous: 7) - Everything is going wrong for the defending East Division champions. They've lost three in a row, quarterback Dan LeFevour is out for the year now, and Tim Hortons Field is a disaster.

9.

Montreal Alouettes (1-6; Previous: 9) - They almost didn't lose to the Riders. But they still can't score on offence. Duron Carter's 122-yard missed field goal return is one of the highlights of the year.

Quarterback rankings:

1. Bo Levi Mitchell, Stampeders (Previous: 2) - We'll give him the edge over Ray for his performance against Hamilton: 271 passing yards and a touchdown, as well as a rushing touchdown.

2. Ricky Ray, Argonauts (Previous: 1) - Ray had two games and was great in one, and less so in the other. He was accurate and threw four touchdown passes against the Bombers, but threw a late, game-sealing pick-six against the Lions.

3. Kevin Glenn, Lions (Previous: 5) - Another solid game (and no turnovers) against the Argos. He's 5-1 in his last six starts. But will he even get the call this week with Travis Lulay being eased back in?

4. Drew Willy, Blue Bombers (Previous: 4) - He did his part in a loss to the Argonauts, throwing for 193 yards and two touchdowns.

5. Mike Reilly, Eskimos (Previous: 3) - Ugly game all around for the Eskimos who didn't score an offensive touchdown.

6. Darian Durant, Roughriders (Previous: 6) - Still not putting up huge numbers. He threw for a touchdown on 221 passing yards in a win over the Als that wasn't full of offence.

7. Henry Burris, Redblacks (Previous: 8) - Nearly helped pull off the upset over the Eskimos. If Matt Carter doesn't fumble after that big catch and run, they probably do.

8. Alex Brink, Alouettes (Previous: 9) - Wasn't great, was under heavy pressure, and the Als' offence is still a mess.

Dan LeFevour is the second Hamilton starting quarterback to go down this year.

9.

Jeremiah Masoli, Tiger-Cats (Previous: NA) - He's the man in Hamilton now with both Dan LeFevour and Zach Collaros injured. Collaros hasn't even resumed practicing yet.

Coming up in Week 9:

Montreal at Winnipeg, Friday, 8:30 ET - The Blue Bombers will have had 10 days off by game time on Friday and looking to end a two-game losing skid. Winnipeg is only 2-2 at home but the Alouettes are winless on the road. Pick: Winnipeg.

Toronto at Edmonton, Saturday, 4 ET - The Argos face former defensive coordinator Chris Jones, who is off to a great start as head coach of the Eskimos. Receiver Jason Barnes returned to the Argos lineup last week, and they may get Chad Owens back against Edmonton. The Eskimos are back home after two games on the road. Eskimos allowing 16.4 points per game, Argos scoring 24.5. Defence wins games. Pick: Eskimos.

Calgary at Ottawa, Sunday, 3 ET - Two teams heading in opposite directions. The Redblacks allow 121 rushing yards per game -- and the Stampeders are expected to get Jon Cornish back this week. Pick: Stampeders.

Saskatchewan at B.C., Sunday, 7 ET - Finally, some West-on-West action. The Roughriders and Lions have the two longest active winning streaks in the league, four and three games, respectively. The Roughriders started the trash talk by putting up a billboard outside B.C. Place. The Lions are expected to get RB Andrew Harris back. Pick: Lions.

Picks -- Last week: 4-0; Season: 17-11

Bye: Hamilton - They need it. Three loses in a row, two injured quarterbacks, and a stadium that still isn't completely built. Forgettable first half, indeed.
