Coyotes prospect Laurent Dauphin gets 6 games for check from behind in Subway Super Series (UPDATED)

What happens during the Subway Super Series does not stay in the Subway Super Series.

The Quebec League has set a strong precedent for holding players accountable for crossing the line outside of regular league games. On Wednesday, Chicoutimi Saguenéens centre Laurent Dauphin bloodied the face of Russia's Igor Baldaev with a check from behind during the first period in Sherbrooke. Sunday, the QMJHL suspended Dauphin for six games.

Dauphin, whom the Phoenix Coyotes selected No. 39 overall in last summer's draft, doesn't have a rap sheet in the QMJHL with just 75 points in 87 games. But checking from behind is not a desirable element in the game and this was a particularly egregious incident.

Baldaev was not in the Russian Selects' lineup for Game 3 of the Super Series on Thursday against Team OHL at Oshawa. If injury to an opposing player is factored into supplemental discipline during league games, it certainly applies when a visiting Russian player is also injured.

Prior to this action, the QMJHL had handed out only one multi-game ban this season for checking from behind.
