“Flat Randy” making the rounds at the London Olympics

Flat Randy is getting around. He's seeing the sights, meeting celebrities and getting his photo taken. Flat Randy has been busy. But, he's about to get busier, to be seen in even more places as the Olympics hit the final weekend.

The tribute to late Toronto Star reporter Randy Starkman, beloved by fellow journalists and athletes alike has strummed heartstring chords the world over. Particularly in London, where the world is meeting for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Flat Randy is a miniature cardboard cut out of Mr. Starkman, the veteran athletics reporter who passed away suddenly this past spring after contracting pneumonia. You can read about how the Flat Randy tribute was started, here.

Flat Randy has been seen at different Olympic venues as well as the odd watering hole, as witnessed in this Twitter picture from Toronto Star editor Michael Cooke.

Below, you can see Flat Randy positioned in the media box at Old Trafford, placed there by Canadian Press reporter Lori Ewing.

A small army of Flat Randys is already positioned in London, and another 50 of them are scheduled to arrive today, carried by Mr. Starkman's daughter, Ella as well as his brother, Laurie. They'll be handed out, autographed and photographed, with those photographs, hopefully, posted to Twitter for all to see. The hashtag #FlatRandy may get a big boost of content this weekend.

No doubt there will be a flood of Flat Randys on Saturday, as the Canadian Olympic Committee pays tribute to Mr. Starkman with a breakfast in his honour, at Canada House, in London. Just as the Olympics were beginning, it was announced that the Canadian media room was being named "The Randy Starkman Press Room."

The Flat Randy story will get even more exposure, we hear, with CTV's Brian Williams paying tribute to Mr. Starkman with a feature report during the network's prime time Olympic broadcast, sometime this weekend.
