Video: Zach Evans' pick-six was a rare touchdown for a defensive tackle

Redblacks' DT Zach Evans' pick-six was one of the team's best moments in Thursday's game.

The vast majority of the CFL's touchdowns are scored by receivers and running backs. Sometimes quarterbacks get in on the action, and we sometimes see pick-sixes from defensive backs and linebackers, but it's much more rare to see a defensive tackle score a touchdown, especially from a long way out. That's what happened in this week's Edmonton Eskimos-Ottawa Redblacks game, though, when Edmonton quarterback Matt Nichols' shovel pass was picked off by 6'4'', 295-pound Ottawa defensive tackle Zach Evans near the Redblacks' own 45-yard-line and returned to the house for six points, providing one of the must-see moments of this season so far:

That's an impressive 66-yard-run from Evans, and good downfield blocking from teammate Antoine Pruneau (who takes out Eskimos' speedy running back/slotback Kendial Lawrence, who otherwise might well have caught up to Evans before the end zone). It shows Evans' awareness of the situation, and his ability to make a big play for his team (even if his ball-carrying technique is somewhat unconventional). Unfortunately for the Redblacks, this was one of their few highlights Thursday; they lost 46-17. Still, it was a great play by Evans, and one that might suggest more to come from him.

Evans is in his second year with the Redblacks, after they claimed him from Saskatchewan in the 2014 expansion draft. He didn't get a lot of playing time with the Roughriders, but he's been an important piece for Ottawa so far, skilled at clogging up the middle and stopping the run as well as pressuring quarterbacks. He's also a vital part of their Canadian talent, which has played a big role in their 2015 success so far; they've already matched their 2014 win total. He'll be a player to watch this season, especially if he can produce more highlight-reel moments like this.
