Vitalant prepares for changes as FDA updates blood donation guidelines

Days after the Food and Drug Administration updated its guidelines on who can donate blood in the U.S. some Sacramento organizations like Sunburst Projects are delighted with the change. The new recommendations are based on data from other countries like Canada and the United Kingdom, which already have them in place, and determined that these wouldn't compromise the safety or availability of the blood supply. The new guidelines mean that blood banks will no longer specifically ask only men about potential HIV respecters. In other words, everyone will be asked the same questions and the guidelines will no longer focus on sexual orientation.
