US Naval Academy holds commissioning ceremony for class of 2023

About 1,000 midshipmen who comprise the U.S. Naval Academy's class of 2023 became commissioned officers Friday. More than 4,400 men and women representing every state in the U.S. and several foreign countries make up the student body, known as the Brigade of Midshipmen. Upon graduation, midshipmen earn a federally funded bachelor of science degree in a choice of 26 different subject majors and go on to serve at least five years as commissioned officers in the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps. Families were beaming with pride. "We are just so excited. Public service is a way of life in our family and you can't imagine what it's like," said Gary Hague, grandfather of a graduate.
