Three free agents the Maple Leafs should pursue

The Toronto Maple Leafs have changed general managers but how much will Brad Treliving test the NHL's pool of free agents? Defenseman Carson Soucy, netminder Joonas Korpisalo and winger Matthew Phillips are three names worthy of consideration.

ARUN SRINIVASAN: Yeah, there's two targets for me. They're not flashy names, but Carson Soucy is one of them. I think he's just criminally underrated. Big boy, skates well, doesn't make mistakes, good possession numbers. If Justin Hall is gone, he can play both sides of the defense. So that's one want.

And if Jonas Korpisalo is available at a cost-friendly price, never hurts to have good goaltending. And honestly, like--

JULIAN MCKENZIE: You want Jonas Korpisalo.

ARUN SRINIVASAN: Yeah.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Interesting.

ARUN SRINIVASAN: I was talking to some friends at a party last night-- goaltending is such a hard variable to bet on unless you're Vasilevskiy or Shesterkin or Ilya Sorokin, no idea you're going to be good year over year. And I think Korpisalo at a $3 million deal, if it's available, worth a bet for a Leafs team that got good goaltending but is still somewhat uncertain with [INAUDIBLE]. Those would be my two big moves. Because again, you can call me crazy, I don't think the Leafs need to do anything drastic per se.

But those would be my two targets aside from, I guess, trying to resign Ryan O'Reilly I suppose. But that would be it. What about you? What do you think?

OMAR: Yeah. I think, for me-- and this may not be like a crazy take, because I think a lot of people have been talking about it, but like-- Matthew Phillips has been a player that I've looked at a little bit more. I think now he's a UFA coming from Calgary and has crazy numbers in the AHL. And like, skill is sick-- love skill. So I don't know maybe if it could be a--

JULIAN MCKENZIE: [INAUDIBLE].

OMAR: Right? So that's a name that I maybe-- I don't know if it's already been done, but I hope the Leafs at least circle around. Because if you're a player that's kind of in this situation and you want to create a platform for yourself where you can kind of stand out and say, hey, I can compete at the NHL level as well, why not do it in Toronto? So I think that-- Matthew Phillips would be a name that I think is--

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Matt Phillips.

OMAR: --I think is doable but would be interesting as well.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Nice kid. I hope he gets an opportunity to start some kind of NHL career. Yeah. Wow. Interesting. Does have [INAUDIBLE] relationship with Brad [? Treliving. ?]
