Scheffler stumbles, Korda closes out bid for 3 straight wins

Yahoo Sports’ Jay Busbee recaps the weekend in golf, including how both world number one players finished a chance for their third straight wins in Houston and Arizona.

JAY BUSBEE: Two world number ones came into this past week with a rare opportunity, the chance to win three tournaments in a row. But only one of them pulled it off. And the reason, clutch putting-- or lack thereof-- on the 18th hole. Every hole counts. We'll start with a positive. Nelly Korda at the Ford championship in Arizona outdistanced the crowd that included 11 players within two shots of the lead on the back 9 on Sunday. She did so by taking the lead on 16 and then birdieing 18 to win the championship outright. She's the first LPGA player to win three times in a row since 2016 and the first American to do it since 1978.

Things didn't go quite so well for Scottie Scheffler over in Houston, where he saw two significant streaks end. First of all, on Friday, on his final hole, he three-putted from inside 6 feet to see his PGA TOUR record streak of 28 straight rounds under par come to a close. He finished with even par. But he stayed in the mix. And he was in the mix for the tournament win all the way up until the 18th on Sunday, when he missed a 5-footer that would have forced a playoff with Stephen Jaeger. He has to comfort himself with the fact that he's gone won, won, T2 in his last three events, and he is still the overwhelming favorite to win that little tournament in East Georgia coming up in a couple of weeks.
