Rangers go from destiny to disappointment

Expectations were sky high in New York after they catapulted from rebuild to contention last season but the Rangers are already in danger of missing the playoffs.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: I guess that only leaves another team that I want to talk about. Once upon a time on this show, a team of destiny. A team we would consider wearing the Disney Cape and everything. The New York Rangers.

OMAR: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. I was not part of that.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: What do you mean you were not part of that? Why do you think we got that whole bet going with Cuthbert last year?

OMAR: That's true. That's true. Yeah.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: If the Rangers were a movie, they'd be "High School Musical 2."

OMAR: Man, that's an insult. That's the worst one, in my opinion. I said what I said. That's the worst one.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: That's my point. It is the worst one.

OMAR: Yeah. Because man, they just-- then the Jacob-- did you see the Athanasiou quote? That's so funny.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: No, I didn't see a quote. What did he say?

OMAR: He-- so I guess they got into it during their game. And then-- and then like, Athanasiou said, like-- I'm paraphrasing. It was like, he makes $8 million and doesn't have any goals. So I guess he has to find a way to do something on the ice. It's like, oh.

[LAUGHS]

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Avry, can you remind the people at home, which Caribbean island that Andreas Athanasiou is partially from?

AVRY LEWIS-MCDOUGALL: Guyanese, man.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Yes, man. Guyanese. Yes, shout out Andreas Athanasiou. I was able to get the name right.

OMAR: Yeah, but the big thing, man, it has to be Shesterkin, right? I mean, and even he himself has admitted it, but it's-- they just-- they're not getting the same saves that they got last year. They're just not. And the timely ones too, right? Like just their recent loss against Ottawa, right?

I think they're up, like, 2-1 or something. And then you check the [INAUDIBLE] you check the game afterwards, they lost like 3-2 in overtime. So like the timely saves, the routine saves, and then the-- that kind of just hurts [INAUDIBLE].

Especially in a year where they probably were like, hey, we're going for the cup this year. And now it's just like-- so now they're just being hit like on all ends when it comes to their confidence. It's brutal.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Yeah, I picked them to go to the Conference Final. When we do that episode where we walk back all the stuff that we got wrong, I feel like I'm going to have a laundry list of stuff.

SAM CHANG: I was actually just thinking about this earlier when we were talking about the Flames and then Nashville. I feel like we all got a lot of things really wrong this year.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Oh yeah. When we get to that episode, we definitely will.
