- Hey, Everyone. And welcome back to another episode of In the Mentions. I'm TicTacTOmar. And when it comes to Mitch Marner being in the Leafs record books, I think instead of focusing on the fact that it has happened, we should focus more on why it's happening or how it's happening. And that comes to the fact that Mitch Marner has really changed his play style and his play perspective.
Instead of going from making the choice between shooting or passing as a playmaker, now he's just doing both. Last year was a big year for him in scoring 35 goals, but he also had a lot of shots, over 200. This year, he's on pace to do the same thing. And again, because when he's in those sweet spots, he's not overly passing or forcing the pass.
Sometimes the players they'd be playing with would kind of put him in that situation. Playing with Matthews, obviously you're trying to look for him all the time. But now he's gotten to a point where he'll take that shot if he has it. If he has the time and space, he'll actually go to those areas and try to capitalize on those chances.
And we've seen all the goals that have been taking place along with his streak. Yes, the assists are there, but the goals that we're seeing is from Marner literally trusting his ability as a goal scorer and as a shooter and shooting his shots. And they're going in.
So the points streak is wicked. And what this does is that we can kind of move on from just focusing on Marner as just a simple playmaker. But no, he's a player that can do both pretty well. From what we've been seeing from this season and also old seasons past, it just really shows what kind of a special player Marner is.
