PARIS — Defender Layvin Kurzawa's goal was just enough as defending champion Paris Saint-Germain earned a scrappy 1-0 win at Angers to go top of the French league on Saturday. But title challenger Lyon can restore its one-point lead by beating mid-table Metz at home on Sunday. PSG was without coach Mauricio Pochettino after he tested positive for the coronavirus, and his two assistants took charge. However, it was an uninspiring performance PSG fans watching at home will quickly forget. Kurzawa volleyed in neatly from just inside the penalty area with 20 minutes left, but his goal had a touch of fortune as a cross from the right hit an Angers defender and looped up invitingly. Angers contained PSG comfortably in midfield but lacked a cutting edge going forward. “We weren't far off,” Angers defender Romain Thomas said. “We prepared for the game very well and it's a pity we couldn't open the scoring.” Earlier, winger Florian Thauvin fluffed a penalty and Marseille paid the price as it was stunned at home by struggling Nimes 2-1. Thauvin sent goalkeeper Baptiste Reynet the wrong way from the spot but his shot went over the crossbar in the 35th minute. Moments later, Reynet saved striker Dario Benedetto’s tame shot from close range with his foot. Sixth-placed Marseille was punished for those misses when Swedish midfielder Niclas Eliasson struck twice in quick succession early in the second half for Nimes to move off the bottom and into 18th place. Benedetto pulled a goal back with five minutes left. Right back Pol Lirola started his first game for Marseille since joining on loan from Italian side Fiorentina but the home side's defence looked shaky without injured goalie Steve Mandanda. “First of all we need to apologize to the fans,” Marseille coach Andre Villas-Boas said. “We didn’t play well and didn’t show a good team spirit. MILAN — Bologna earned its first win since November by beating Hellas Verona 1-0 in Serie A on Saturday. Bologna's winless run included three defeats and five draws. Riccardo Orsolini scored from the penalty spot in the first half in Bologna after Verona goalkeeper Marco Silvestri brought down Roberto Soriano. Bologna eased its fears of being dragged into a relegation battle as it moved eight points above the bottom three. Verona remained ninth, four points below the Europa League qualifying spots. NUMERICAL DISADVANTAGE Relegation-threatened Torino could manage only 0-0 at home to promoted Spezia, despite its opponent playing most of the match with 10 men. Spezia midfielder Luca Vignali was initially shown only a yellow card for his sliding challenge on Nicola Murru but that was upgraded to a red on video review as the tackle was also studs-up and high. That happened in the eighth minute but Spezia nevertheless outplayed Torino comfortably. Torino had barely a sight of the target although it did have two goals ruled out -- one for offside and another for a foul on the Spezia goalkeeper -- and Cristian Ansaldi hit the post as the home side upped the pressure in the final 10 minutes. Torino remained a point below safety and five points below Spezia. SAMP PREVAILS Sampdoria came from behind to beat relegation-threatened Udinese 2-1 and move into the top half of the table. Udinese remained three points above the drop zone. NEWARK, N.J. — Egor Sharangovich scored his first NHL goal in the final seconds of overtime to propel the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Saturday. MacKenzie Blackwood made 27 saves and picked up his first victory of the season. Miles Wood also scored for the second consecutive game for New Jersey. Boston's Patrice Bergeron scored and Jaroslav Halak made 29 saves, including two critical stops in the final minutes of the third period to force the extra session. Devils defenceman Damon Severson made a nifty backhand pass at the edge of the offensive zone to set up the 22-year-old Sharangovich with 1.7 seconds remaining in overtime. Bergeron evened the score with a shorthanded goal at 17:16 of the second period. Brad Marchand won a puck battle against Devils forward Kyle Palmieri before setting up the new captain of the Bruins. Boston appeared to tie the game shortly before Bergeron’s strike, but the game officials ruled Blackwood was unable to make a save due to incidental contact. Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy unsuccessfully challenged the play, which led to the bench minor. Wood opened the scoring with a redirection at 16:15 of the first period. The 31-year-old forward played the prior nine seasons with the Nashville Predators HELMET DECALS The Bruins are honouring the life and legacy of Travis Roy with a commemorative TR 24 emblem on their helmets this season. Roy was paralyzed from the neck down 11 seconds into his first shift with Boston University in 1995 and created the Travis Roy Foundation to support spinal cord injury survivors in 2012. Roy passed away in October at the age of 45. SMITH EXTENDS POINT STREAK Rookie defenceman Ty Smith recorded his first NHL assist on Wood’s goal in the first period. The 22-year-old centre sustained the injury while training in Switzerland in December but did not require surgery. The Devils selected Hischier with the first overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Los Angeles Rams won’t have leading receiver Cooper Kupp available for their NFC divisional playoff game against the top-seeded Green Bay Packers. Kupp headlines the Rams’ list of inactive players for Saturday’s game. He had been listed as questionable with a knee injury. Kupp had 92 catches for 974 yards in the regular season to lead the Rams in both categories, and three of his receptions went for touchdowns. He followed that up by catching four passes for 78 yards in a 30-20 playoff victory at Seattle last week. The Rams also will be missing starting left guard David Edwards, who had been listed as questionable with an ankle injury. The Rams’ other inactive players are quarterbacks Bryce Perkins and John Wolford, outside linebacker Terrell Lewis, offensive lineman Brian Allen plus wide receiver Trishton Jackson. Rams coach Sean McVay already had announced Thursday that Wolford wouldn’t be available. Wolford started against Seattle but left early in the game with a neck stinger. The Packers will be playing without defensive lineman Kingsley Keke, who had a pair of two-sack games during the regular season. ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Brazil's Vanessa Melo won a unanimous decision over Canadian bantamweight Sarah (Cheesecake) Moras on a UFC card Saturday. The judges scored it 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 for Melo, who came into the bout as a betting underdog. Moras's mouth fell open in surprise when the decision went against her. But Melo held a 56-44 edge in significant strikes according to UFC Stats, which had Moras attempting 200 strikes to 169 for the Brazilian. "I think I controlled all three rounds, dominated the cage," said Melo. "She threw a lot of punches, but I barely got hit. I connected more. " Former featherweight champion Max (Blessed) Holloway, ranked No. 1 among 145-pound contenders, faced No. 6 Calvin (The Boston Finisher) Kattar in Saturday's main event at Etihad Arena. Moras and Melo were originally slated to meet in November but the fight was pushed back to January. The five-foot-seven Moras, who held a two-inch height and reach advantage, looked to connect from distance in the first round. Moras kept circling, trying to avoid Melo's power, while attacking the Brazilian with low kicks and jabs. Moras (6-8-0) lost her mouthpiece early in the second round after absorbing a blow to the face and was soon bleeding from the nose and mouth. Melo kept coming forward with Moras dancing away. Melo fought off a late Moras takedown attempt in the round. It was more of the same in the third with Moras throwing jabs on the move and Melo unsuccessfully trying to chase her down. Both fighters were in need of a win. Moras, a native of Kelowna, B.C, who fights our of Las Vegas, has now lost five of her previous six fights. The 32-year-old was coming off a decision loss last May to Sijara (Sarj) Eubanks, currently ranked 14th among 135-pound contenders. It was the first outing for the Canadian since September 2019 when she defeated Georgia's Liana (She Wolf) Jojua by third-round TKO at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi. Melo (11-8-0) had lost all three of her previous UFC fights, all by decision. Moras, whose UFC career has been interrupted by injuries, is 3-6-0 in the promotion. Her Cheesecake nickname came after a friend dared her to come out to her first pro fight to the song "Cheesecake'" by the Muppets.
