Haze Blankets Central Alberta as Number of Wildfires Grows

Wildfire smoke blanketed parts of central Alberta early on Wednesday, May 17, amid ongoing evacuations in the region, local officials said.

Footage captured by Michael Thomlinson shows hazy conditions in Slave Lake, located about 155 miles (250 km) north of Edmonton, around dawn on Wednesday.

Wildfire smoke traveled from the region into midwestern US states including Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin, the National Weather Service said, and would linger throughout the day into Thursday.

By Wednesday morning, the number of active wildfires in Alberta had grown to 91, according to official fire information, while 63 burned in British Columbia. Credit: Michael Thomlinson via Storyful
